Mátészalka curiosities [edit]
The first house of Hungary illuminated by electric lights in 1888 – at the same time as in New York – was the house of Pál Szalkai (Schwarz) at the address 16 (the current) Kossuth Street, Mátészalka.
Power was provided by the electricity department of the Szalka Factory and Agricultural JSC founded by Mór Schwarcz in the mid-1800s.
Even today, there is a solid iron utility post, one of the first, original ones, on the square situated at the intersection of Rákóczi Street and Kossuth Street.
Here, on the square at the intersection of the two streets, there is also a statue by Lajos Bíró, a Mátészalka sculptor, called „The Lamplighter”.
The house at 16 Kossuth Street bears a memorial plaque on the wall today.
The event is commemorated each year in the first week of September by organizing the Mátészalka Bright Days Festival. [1]
