Description of the accommodation:
A historical treasure of the Transylvanian baroque
The former summer residence of Samuel von Brukenthal has awakened from its slumber in 2011. For nearly a decade hardly anyone was interested in this historic treasure. The palace as well as the park and its buildings belong to the most important monuments from the time of the Transylvanian Baroque. In Southern Transylvania, it is indeed the only surviving baroque ensemble at all.
Once called “Transylvania´s Garden of Eden”, this baroque estate was built in the end of the 18th century by governor Samuel von Brukenthal. This little paradise garden with the enchanted palace is situated in the small town Avrig, at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains, at 20 kilometers east of Sibiu at National Road DN1.
This cultural heritage deserves to be opened to the public. With the redevelopment of the Orangery in the park, an important first step has been taken. Now guests find proper accomodation facilities, a permanently open restaurant and a place to organize events of all kinds. The park will gradually get back its original design, including the numerous fountains that once existed. The biggest challenge, though, remains the restoration of the baroque palace, whose substance has suffered during the years of vacancy.
